AIM of Safety & Survival Week:

To familiarise the children with the feeling of being in water with clothes on, if they happened to fall into a pool or waterway, accidentally – then they may not panic quite so much; to teach the children water survival skills, to help themselves and possibly others, in an emergency situation.

    This may be a completely new experience for some children, especially if they are new to our centre, so we try to make it fun as well as instructional.

    Instructors will talk to them the whole time,

oexplaining how their clothes feel heavy;

oit is harder to swim to get to the edge;

othey will sink lower into the water, with clothes on.

o Not all activities will be done, at every session.

o Activities will be chosen according to children’s ability and age.

o Clothes will not be on for full lesson – activities run for half the lesson only.

Why do we have a Safety & Survival Week?

Develop confidence to act calmly

Accidents happen when you least expect them

We have changed the name of this week, from Water Safety Week to ‘Safety & Survival Week’, in an effort to emphasise the importance of teaching water safety skills to our young swimmers.

Our new mascot is called ‘Sammy Safety’ and he will feature on all our Safety and Survival literature from now on.

We hope that you will take this opportunity to discuss safety and survival situations with your children, so that they will learn to become safer around the water.

Each term there is a theme. Children are asked to dress up and come to swimming and get their photo taken! There will be a prize of 4 x FREE swimming lessons for the best dressed. Children are asked to wear their clothes (or some other old ones), in the pool for the first half of their lesson.

Instructors will be teaching water safety techniques – to help skill your children in emergency procedures, should a situation arise.

This week is an important part of our swimming programme, as children only learn by repetition, and grow with confidence in handling any emergency if taught not to panic.
